Update on voluntary evacuation of Walker Road and Simons Point Road

August 18, 2023-9:00 a.m.

While the washout on this section of trail is not a threat for landslide, the condition remains a priority. Over the last couple of weeks and following the initial assessment by a geotechnical engineer, other engineers have evaluated conditions and a slope survey was carried out. We have reviewed their collective recommendations for short- and long-term stabilization with our provincial and trail partners, and will begin repair/reconstruction once a contractor is available. We will post an update as details emerge.

July 28, 2023 - 11:45 a.m.

An inspection of the trail above Walker Road early this morning showed no marked difference overnight. Based on the geotechnical engineer's assessment last evening, ongoing inspections of the area, and the forecasted weather, we are lifting the voluntary evacuation for Walker Road and Simons Point Road in Chester.

Today (July 28), a professional survey by a geotechnical engineer will be completed. From the survey, a stabilization plan will be developed.

Residents are advised to exercise caution when travelling the road as it may be impacted by debris and/or minor washouts. To report a washout, contact the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works at 1-844-696-7737. Trails remain closed and residents are asked not to access any part of the trail as it is unsafe at this time.

You can expect to see municipal staff over the coming weeks inspecting conditions on the trail. Future updates will be posted here.

At this time we are not considering a mandatory evacuation.

Geotechnical engineer assessment revealed that the amount of rainfall predicted for the next couple of days will not pose an immediate risk to life or property on Walker Road or Simons Point Road.

The volume of rain during last Friday's storm caused a severe initial washout, but the failure happened from the top (crest) of the trail bed, pushing material downslope to the road, essentially flattening the slope. Forecasted rainfall will continue to move material, but is unlikely to pose a threat of catastrophic failure.

Residents are advised to exercise caution when travelling the road as it may be impacted by debris and/or minor washouts. To report a washout, contact the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works at 1-844-696-7737.

We will continue to monitor the trail and provide another update by noon tomorrow.
